Leadership Management Training
Now I also know that there are no solutions for a leader or manager that is not a good fit for their position. Leadership management training is not intended to radically change a person that is flat out not meant for management. Someone that is arrogant, rude, prejudice, or any other inbred trait that requires more than just leadership training to resolve. No we must start with an individual that wants to improve their business.
The real challenge is to find a leadership management training program that lends itself to the challenges that your workplace is facing. That may mean that you have to do some close honest evaluations of your situation. Are you having a problem with attendance? Are you having a problem with quality? Are you having a problem with productivity? Are you having a problem with high turnover? Are you having a problem with high supply or equipment costs? So in other words honestly take a look at your weaknesses. This can be hard for some leaders. They feel like they are failing. But the truth is that you must recognize your weaknesses in order to become better.
The information stuck quickly since it immediately opened my eyes…
Some of the best leadership management training I have been to were those that incorporated some type of role playing. But that role playing went so much further in that the instructors actually did much of the role playing between themselves. In one case they had professional actors! It was simply the very best leadership training class I had been to. I got more out of that training than any other that I had been too. The information stuck quickly since it immediately opened my eyes to things that actually were happening within the workplace. This particular training was expensive but well worth the money.
Other leadership management training classes that were beneficial to me were those that allowed for feedback. On the other hand I am not a big fan of those that require me to independently write out my goals on how I will do things differently when I get back to the workplace. Now this might work for some, just not for me.
We sometimes ignore the things that are going on in someone’s life…
One leadership management training program that I simply just loved and still impacts how I go about my job is “Covey’s 7 Habits!” One part especially had an impact and that was where we sometimes ignore the things that are going on in someone’s life outside of the workplace that can impact their performance. No as leaders it is hard for us to solve their personal problems, nor are we hired to do so, but we can try to understand them. Now the bottom line is that are business must still perform, otherwise we are out of business! But getting to the root cause of any issue will go a long way to solving the problem.
As an example is someone is late you may want to keep asking why until you get down to the root cause of the problem.
So the conversation may go like this;
Leader: Why are you late?
Employee: Because I missed the bus!
Leader: Why did you miss the bus?
Employee: Because I didn’t hear my alarm clock!
Leader: Why didn’t you hear your alarm clock?
Employee: Because I got to bed very late!
Leader: Why did you get to bed so late?
Employee: Because I was at the hospital!
Leader: Why were you at the hospital?
Employee: Because my mother is very ill and I had to help get her into the emergency room last night!
Get the point! The good thing about the various leadership management training programs that are available is that there is one that will fit your very specific needs. Don’t ever think of it being a waste of time or money!
