Types of Harassment

The various Types of Harassment can be a wide variety of events but ultimately the infraction must be against a protected class. A protected class is someone that falls into one of the following categories; sex, religion, age, sexual preference, national origin, or race. At some point if you live long enough all of us, like me, will fall into a protected class! Therefore, if you are harassed by someone because you are in a protected class then you can claim Harassment at Work!

Now let’s get back to the Types of Harassment. Let’s start off with the most common and that would be Sexual Harassment. Keep in mind that it can occur between a man and a woman, a woman and a woman, a woman and a man, and a man and a man. Is that confusing or what? Yes like I said earlier we can all fall into a category if we live long enough, and that doesn’t just me age!

So let’s see how easy it might be to fall into one of the protected classes...

Other Forms of Harassment could be Racial Harassment, Religious Harassment, National Origin Harassment, Sexual Preference Harassment, Age Harassment, etc. Keep in that sometimes people refer to Harassment as a Hostile Work Environment. Again, in order to claim a Hostile Work Environment you must be in one of the protected classes.

So let’s see how easy it might be to fall into one of the protected classes and be placed into one of the Types of Harassment categories!

If you are a Caucasian male who is over forty, you would be considered in a protected class! If you are a Christian and are experiencing abuse this could be another one of the Types of Harassment because being a Christian would be a protected class. Even if you are a Caucasian, but your National Origin is Spain, you are a protected class!

The main office has five female employees who have a male Caucasian supervisor over forty years old!

The point is that almost all of us like I mentioned earlier may fall into a protected class. It’s the actions that someone in a protected class endure that turns it into a Hostile Work Environment, i.e., Harassment.

As an example, if you have a work force of two hundred. The main office has five female employees who have a male Caucasian supervisor over forty years old! All five females are under forty and Caucasian. The male supervisor continually refers to the females as his little harem to all the other department heads. He has never directly made these comments to the females in his office directly. Could this be one of those Types of Harassment that is protected?

The short answer is that it very much is! I’m sure you also agreed and it is a no brainer. This however, is how it generally occurs. In some cases it is even more blatant than this! Many people try to pass off Harassment in the Workplace as joking when they are confronted. However, it is no laughing matter when you are accused of if, and rightfully so! Therefore, it is critical that everyone is treated fairly! This is to your organizations advantage since a happy workforce generally is a better and more productive one.

Good Luck and May God Bless You!
