Small Business Employee Manual

If you are contemplating whether you need a small business employee manual or not let me leave you with just this! Although many employment law suits are settled prior to ever entering a courtroom, around 90% plus, the amounts awarded range from $100,000 to $1,000,000 or more.

Now I don't know about you, but I don't need to experience this type of loss to know that it could close the doors of most small businesses. Even if you are able to survive this type of loss it will severely damage your ability to operate!

The primary reasons small businesses, or any business for that matter, is hit with an employment law suit is the lack of communications and not treating everyone equally. Now in some cases there are business owners and supervisors that will not pay attention to common sense no matter what you do. I am hopefully speaking with the other large majority of business owners today, when I say that having written policies that you have informed your employee's of, is the very first step to protecting yourself.

Having a small business employee manual and then following it is the second important step. What that clearly means is that having a reasonable policy and then holding everyone equally accountable to it is the key to avoiding the courtroom! If you choose to selectively enforce your policies then you might as well not have any at all.

For instance one of the biggest mistakes business owners make is that they allow a better performing employee to slide on a policy while holding a different employee accountable. You can try to justify it all day long, but the court is going to hammer you in the end. Yes it is your business and you can run it the way you want, provided you don't violate the law. Guess what? Discrimination is a violation of the law!

If that better performing employee is under forty and the other one is not, then you are gambling that they don't file a discrimination charge against you for age. Doesn't matter if you are over forty or not!

So as you produce your small business employee manual consider all the various employee policies that you will need. Sometimes it helps to seek the aid of an employee policy manual software written by employment attorneys. You can usually pick one up for less than fifty dollars that will satisfy all states. Most will have prewritten templates of countless employment policies that you can change to fit your very specific needs.

Some other examples of what you may want to include in your small business employee manual would be attendance, tardy, gossip, smoking, time off, sick time, sexual harassment, progressive discipline, health benefits, discrimination, Family Medical Leave Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, fighting, insubordination, falsifying company documents, etc.

This is just the tip of the ice berg! The point is that you need to inform and enforce your policies. It will go a long way to keeping your bank account in good standing!

Good Luck and May God Bless You!
