Importance of Communication Skills

The importance of communication skills in the workplace is the difference between being successful and failing!

Everything you accomplish revolves around your ability to communicate your message to your staff!

How do you know you communicate well?

Things get done correctly the first time!

If we don't have time to get it done the first time correctly, why in the world would we ever think we have time to do it over and over again!

The importance of communication skills roles over into your training as well.

Your hands and arms sends a message that you are confident

Everything from understanding your body language to where you place your hands and arms sends a message that you are confident, or you are doubting yourself. Do you want them to learn and accept your leadership or doubt everything you say?

Whether you praise in public and correct in private also sends a message of confidence. No quicker way to loose your staff's respect than to criticize in public!

The words you choose are also important. Do you talk over everyones head or like they are stupid!

The importance of communication skills when it comes to providing feedback during employee reviews is also critical. Do you just ramble on and on or do you offer real credible feedback? Take time to really think about what your feedback should be. All employees want honest feedback!

Let potential employees know during an interview of my expectations

I take an opportunity to let potential employees know during an interview of my expectations as well. I do this by incorporating them into my questions. I may set up a question about unscheduled time off, by stating that unscheduled time off is a huge issue for our organization. How many unscheduled days off do you feel is a reasonable number in a year? I would follow that up with, do you have a reference that can verify your leave record?

The importance of communication skills is the difference between being offensive to someone and being understood.

Voice inflection can change the whole meaning of your words.

Have someone that can give you honest feedback about all your abilities as it relates to your communication skills. Be willing to accept their criticism! Grow from it!
