Funny Christian Stories - King Belshazzar of Babylon

There are funny Christian stories throughout the bible where God showed various individuals who was really in charge. You see, God always gets the final say in things. A couple of these Christian stories can be found in Daniel.

One of the funny Christian stories that comes out of the book of Daniel is found in chapter 5.

King Belshazzar was a descendant to King Nebuchadnezzar who had originally over taken Jerusalem and brought back the vessels of the house of the one and True God. He put those vessels into what he considered to be the house of his God.

Funny Christian Stories – King Belshazzar

Many Historians say that King Belshazzar ruled the land of Babylon with his father Nabonidus.

Now King Belshazzar had a great big party where he had invited what the bible (KJV) said was at a thousand of his closest Confidants, or what the bible (KJV) refers to as lords. Now I don't know about you but that is a lot of lords.

They were drinking at the time and I imagine that the King is having a good old time. So much so that he decides to have his staff bring in the golden and silver vessels which King Nebuchadnezzar had brought back from Jerusalem when it took it over.

Now there is no mention in the book of Daniel as to these vessels ever being used before, which should have given King Belshazzar a clue to the idea not to use them now.

But no he wasn't that smart!

He decides that he is so much in control of everything that lets just show God who is in charge. Now for him to have thought about using these vessels I can only imagine that he had heard all the stories.

So many today hear the Word of God and laugh it off like it was some type of old wise tale.

Funny Christian Stories – King Belshazzar

I'm guessing that so much time had passed since Daniel and King Nebuchadnezzar had interacted that King Belshazzar just thought of it as fable and not the True and living God.

So he brings in the vessels. The party I'm sure has really become festive now. I'm sure that King Belshazzar has consumed a great deal of wine and surely is drunk. To bring the Holy vessels into such a drunken party was blasphemous. The King himself was trying to put himself above God.

We often don't think about what we are doing before we do it. We think we can just do whatever we want and it will go unnoticed by God. Trust me, God is noticing!

Funny Christian Stories – King Belshazzar

So then he even goes one more step beyond when he raises the Holy Vessels up and toasts his gods of gold, and silver, of brass, of iron, of wood, and of stone (KJV). Not very smart.

What are some of the gods that people toast today. Especially when they have been drinking. Not a lot of good decisions are made when a person has been drinking excessively.

Now here is where the funny Christian stories part comes into play. The King saw just a hand come out and write something on the wall. Now it explains that his whole attitude changed. His countenance changed. In plain English he was scared to death. He was so scared his knees started knocking against each other.

Funny Christian Stories – King Belshazzar

No I don't know about you but here is the King of Babylon so scared from seeing something that he was shaking fiercely. One minute your drinking and toasting to your fake gods, and the next you are so scared the party stops on a dime.

God has a way of getting the last laugh, and having the last word. I suppose they thought because nothing had happened since they had brought the vessels in from Jerusalem back when King Nebuchadnezzar ruled, surely there was no God.

Well, guess what? God wrote the words on the wall Mene Mene Tekel Pharsin.

To make matters even worse for the stupid King Belshazzar, he calls in his cast of the dumb and dumber. Well I guess the KJV calls them astrologers, the Chaldean's, and the soothsayers. Now there's a good plan. Worked out well for him. They had no clue what the words meant.

Funny Christian Stories – King Belshazzar

So his wife, who apparently wasn't even at this party (good marriage they had) comes in and advises the King to call Daniel who had been able to help King Nebuchadnezzar out several times.

So he calls Daniel and offers him great things including the third position of authority in land.

Daniel tells the King he is not interested in any of his stuff! He tells the King he will interrupt the words on the wall anyway.

He explains that Mene Mene meant that the King Belshazzar's rule was over basically. That Telkel meant that his life had been evaluated and found to be wrong. That Peres meant that the Babylon kingdom was going to taken and divided by the Medes and Persians.

Funny Christian Stories – King Belshazzar

Guess what? Later that night the was slain and the kingdom was taken over by the Medes and Persians.

King Belshazzar didn't think that was possible since the walls were 22 feet thick and 90 feet high. The doors to the outer gates were made of bronze. There was a system of moats and other security pieces in place. They thought that they were safe.

Do we do the same. Do we rely on our bank accounts, our position at our job, our education, or anything else so much so that we forget that God is really in charge.

Funny Christian Stories – King Belshazzar

Don't be fooled into thinking that you can make your own future. Yes you make the decisions, but it is God who either Blesses it or lets you go off on your own.

Make the decision today and let God be in your life by asking His Son Jesus Christ into your heart.

Don't think your 22 foot thick walls that are 90 foot high are gong to protect you!

God will have the final say!

Thank you!
