Equal Employment Opportunity

The term EEO means Equal Employment Opportunity. The EEOC, which stands for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission can be your worst nightmare if you are not abiding by the Workplace Harassment Laws. They are in place to make sure your employees are treated fairly based on the current Workplace Harassment Laws. The laws in place are easy to abide by provided you do treat all your employees fairly.

As an example the Equal Employment Opportunity Laws state that you must not harass any protect class employee. A protected class would be race, religion, national origin, sexual preference, age, and sex. The EEO laws state that you must hire anyone in these groups based on the same criteria you would hire anyone else at your organization. On the same note you would pay them the same pay based on their skills. Trust me when I tell you that you better have documentation and evidence if you are not, if you undergo an EEO investigation.

This will include training classes that people attend, pay rates, qualifications of all employees in that job skill, etc.

One of the first things the Equal Employment Office will ask for is your hiring records and all other pertinent information on all your employees to compare them with the person filing the EEO compliant. This will include training classes that people attend, pay rates, qualifications of all employees in that job skill, etc. Even when you are right it can be a painful experience. Trust me I have been through this and an Affirmative Action Inspection. They can also take a look at how you are attracting your work force.

Everything will be under the microscope and rarely does anything look good really close up! So as you hire, train, promote, reassign, and offer workplace benefits, make sure you are looking at things only from a professional perspective. This is to the best of your advantage anyway if you are truly in business to make a profit. Offering someone not qualified just because you are trying to hold someone else back based on your own prejudice is just stupid. However, there are a lot of stupid people out there and that is the purpose for the Equal Employment Office.

Maybe it’s their age and they want so called “New Blood!”

With this all said and done there are still many organizations out there that don’t keep good records and treat people fairly. They terminate individuals quickly when they meet certain criteria that a new supervisor has a prejudice to. Maybe it’s their age and they want so called “New Blood!” Maybe they are looking for a more male oriented workforce for those in the Construction Industry. It can be for any number of reasons that a business puts themselves at risk and justifiably! Those companies are foolish and sometimes they don’t even realize that some of their management staff are treating unfairly based on the above protected classes.

Good Luck and May God Bless You!
