Books on Military Leadership
One of my favorite books on military leadership is "It's Your Ship" by Captain D. Michael Abrashoff. I really found his leadership stories inspiring while he was in command of the USS Benfold!
Some of the techniques he used and his style of leadership gave me great insight on ways I could tap into his knowledge.
Having spent twelve years in the Marine Corps I feel very qualified to review books on military leadership, such as this one!
The way Abrashoff lays it out in this book it is clear that the military often times has a better understanding of leadership than most business corporations today. We need to take advantage of their style.
As I have talked about, although a little bit differently in my previous articles, Abrashoff also talks about finding round people for round holes. I couldn't agree more and I find this to be an especially important leadership skill. Being able to recognize the strengths and weakness of your staff is critical.
Another leadership skill that Abrashofftalks about is to "Nurture the Freedom to Fail". How important to utilize this skill so that your staff will continually strive and to try new ways of doing things.
This is a quick read and you will mentally refer back to it continually. I know that I do!
It is also one of the best books on military leadership I have read in some time.
I highly recommend it!
