Age Discrimination Article

I have provided this age discrimination article to help you understand how easily it can happen in the workplace!

Make sure you cover discrimination in your employee handbook.

You be the judge of the following possible discrimination scenario that involves age.

Age Discrimination Article
The other candidate was fifty-five years old

Recently a thirty-eight year old manager was conducting interviews for a computer software position, for a very large company.

The manager had decided to interview only two of the candidates that had provided resumes for the open position. This was decided since both candidates met the minimum requirements set by the company in the job posting, and the position description.

One of the candidates who was twenty-four years old had two years experience, while the other candidate was fifty-five years old with twenty-seven years of experience. Both had the education required as well has the specific computer software experience called for by the job posting.

The manager interviewing for the position received an email prior to the interviews from their supervisor stating they needed to find someone with fresh ideas.

The manager decided on the younger candidate

During the interview of the older candidate the manager stated things like - "We are looking for someone with fresh ideas!" - "We are not getting any younger are we." - "Sometimes I find it hard to keep up with these kids just out of college - you know what I mean. They are really quick to learn."

The manager decided on the younger candidate and offered them a position.

Do you think they could be open for an age discrimination charge?

Is what you say during an interview important?

Can emails be used as evidence?

What you say during an interview is very important and certainly any references to such things as age can be troublesome. Whenever evaluating an applicant or employee the only consideration should be at the actual qualifications.

Thank you!
