The Top 5 Leadership Qualities!

What the top 5 leadership qualities all great leaders possess?

Visionary

Integrity

Inspirational

Competent

Committed

These are without question the top five qualities necessary to be a great leader!

Let’s start with the fact that all great leaders must be able to see things the way they should or could be. They know that the current state of things can and should be better. They are the type of person that if they were lost in the middle of nowhere would look at objects as potential shelter, fuel, food, transportation, or anything else that would benefit their situation. If their business is experiencing a problem they see past the problem and begin immediately identifying possible solutions.

This is first and most important of the top 5 leadership qualities. No other leadership quality can jump start an organization more than someone that has a vision. In my opinion this is not something that can be taught! It is an inner quality that not everyone has. They are the type of person who can look at someone within their staff and immediately detect the potential of that person. They are the type of person that can envision a process from start to finish before it has even been developed. Perhaps one could say (I would be one of them) that Henry Ford having a vision of the assembly line was a great visionary.

The second of the top 5 leadership qualities is integrity. If you have read any of my other articles you understand that integrity is much more than someone being honest! Integrity is the part of a person that makes up their personality. What do they believe in and do they waver when put under pressure. Diamonds, which are considered an extremely precious stone, are the result of coal being under pressure for a long period of time.

It is easy for someone to claim they believe something but it is another thing for them to maintain that belief even unto death. Most would say that a parent would give up their life for their child but until they are tested we really don’t know. Integrity is the result of a person having been tested and they maintained their belief, whatever it was. If I believe in my staff but will not defend them to my supervisor I have no integrity!

The third of the top 5 leadership qualities is a person that is inspirational! Inspirational leaders are able to take their vision and inspire all those around them to see that same vision also. But it goes one step beyond just that. An inspirational person is able to inspire those that see that same vision into wanting to take action. This is a very special gift not many have. Whether it is a learned skill or not I suppose doesn’t matter. What does matter is that it is real and not just a con artist.

All great leaders must be competent. If a leader is not competent those following them will know almost immediately. You can’t hide incompetence.

The final of the top 5 leadership qualities is commitment! If the leader is not committed why should anyone else be? My favorite story will always be about Colonel Sanders of Kentucky Fried Chicken having presented his plan to over nine hundred people before someone finally said yes. If that is not committed I don’t know what is. Not sure if he had all the other qualities or not but certainly he was committed.

Therefore, if you are a leader or are in a position of leadership build off these qualities and you will be on the road to success. They are the foundation of what it takes to lead people.
